Chapter 1: Fresh Blood

In the back of the class, during the last class, passing notes with my friends Sandy and Chad. Ms. Bordas was lecturing about George Washington’s two terms. I ignored her teaching as I glanced out the window, bored.

The bell finally rang and everyone left, aside myself. I had received a detention for forgetting my homework, again. Can you believe it? This was my first detention for forgetting homework, or for any other reason at that.

“Ms. Stefan, I do hope you know why you’re here.” Ms. Bordas sighed, pushing her glasses up with her index finger.

“Yeah.” I grumbled.

She nodded and sat back down at her desk, grading papers. I sighed as boredom sunk in yet again, having finished my homework already. Time passed slowly, I began to doze off and soon, sleep took me under.

“Isabella..!” A voice said, as a hand shook my shoulder. “Isabella!”

I recognized the voice then, my horrid teacher had woken me. My eyes opened, I lifted my head off the desk and stretched my arms as I yawned.

“You are free to go now, it’s nearing seven.” She said as she gave me a warm smile, as she walked away.

I rolled my eyes as I stood up from the uncomfortable desk, gathering my books. Leaving the room as slowly as possible, trying to avoid going home. I was still really annoyed over Ms. Bordas’ singling a student out, especially when that certain student didn’t do anything wrong..!

“Stupid woman..!” I growled as I ran out of the school, pissed off as I was, running off to the park. My house was far from the park, far out of the way, but I needed a distraction for a few minutes so I stopped near a bench. I caught my breath as I leaned against it and looked around, the area I was in lacking a street lamp. Darkness surrounding me, but I didn’t mind, the blackness of night was like a blanket to me.

I took a seat on the bench and began to hum a familiar tune when I noticed a boy leaning against a tree on the opposite side of the path. I stared at him, trying to recognize him, but he wasn’t in any of my classes.

He wore all black clothing and had short silver hair, his lip pierced on both sides, appearing like fangs. His eyes black, seductive, hungry, but yet, they seemed tormented and sad.

“Hey there.” He greeted, standing upright.

“Um, hello..?” I said, nervously, his eyes scanning me quickly.

I didn’t notice his second move, but suddenly he came right to my side, causing me to drop my books. His body was close and his face closer, I blushed as he put one of his hands around my waist. He pulled my close to him, his face near my own.

His lips twitched up into a wicked grin, his teeth shining under the little light there was. His other hand reached up and brushed my hair back, revealing my neck. His lips brushed against my cheek and slowly made their way to my jaw line, hot against my skin but yet his hands so cold.

“Your blood smells so good.” He said as his mouth reached my throat. My eyes widened as I realized his true intentions.

“Vampire.” I gasped silently as his teeth punctured my skin, sharp and pointed.

His arm tightened around my waist, holding me close into his body as his other hand covered my mouth. He lifted his lips from my throat as I felt my blood slowly drip from the bite marks.

“You’re smart.” He said with a smile.

His lips returned to my neck as his fangs sank into my skin yet again. I tried to break free from his iron grip but it was to no avail. More of my blood slid down my neck, hot in comparison to his ice cold skin. I realized I was facing death now and accepted the fact. Tears welled up in my eyes as I began to cry.

“Enough, James, let her go..!” Someone ordered, his fangs left my skin quickly, I slowly staggered to the side as his arms stopped supporting me.

“C’mon, James, she’s a human..!” Someone else said in a low growl.

I slowly began to fall to my knees but a cold hand caught me, arms surrounding me and pulling me into their chest. No heat radiated from the skin, Another vampire! my mind shrieked.

I felt safe, though, as the cold, soft skin comforted me. I tried to see the face of my guardian angel but I couldn’t, my vision blurred. I realized it was a boy holding me and -even though I had a shortage on blood- I blushed a deep scarlet.

“Julian, is she okay?” Another boy’s voice asked, kind of childish.

“I’m no sure,” My guardian, Julian, said in a low, worried voice. “She’s lost a lot of blood.”

I heard something, or someone struggling as Julian lifted me off of the ground, cradling me in his arms. Suddenly I felt wind against my skin, my eye lids drooping, begging for sleep.

“Isabella, don’t fall asleep, yet.” Julian’s voice said, pleading.

“But I’m tired.” I protested, my words slurring together.

“I know, but just stay awake, you’ll be able to sleep soon.” He promised, as the wind stopped.

Silence met my ears as I leaned against his chest. His heart was silent, and it scared me. My hand gripped his shirt and someone sighed, not him, though.

“Take her to the guest room on the west wing.” A woman said, kind and gentle. “I’ll be back around four.”

I heard nothing after that as Julian began to walk quickly up what I thought to be stairs, but I couldn’t be sure. My eyes closed, sleep trying so hard to pull me under. Julian’s fingers pinched my arm, making me flinch.

“A little while longer, Isabella,” He sighed as I heard a door squeak open and close. He set me down on a soft bed, and pulled the covers over me. I felt him sit next to me, my vision beginning to return to my eyes.

“I’m sorry, Isabella.” He said his voice pained, his hand brushing my hair out of my eyes. I remained silent, trying to keep my eyes open. His fingers brushed my cheek, sending chills down my spine.

“Kill me,” I whispered, his body tensed. “;Please, kill me.” I begged.

“Why do you wish for death?” He asked, his eyes shining from the moonlight that came in from the window.

“There’s no point,” I began. “I detest life..”

“As do I, but you don’t see me asking a stranger to take my life.” He replied, his voice sharp.

“You probably have a better life than me..” I retorted, referring to my family in my mind.

“You’re right, your family is very cold to you.” He whispered, his voice thoughtful.

“How would you know?” I asked, my eyes narrowing.

“I plead the fifth.” Julian said, avoiding my question, but he was good at keeping me from sleep.

“Cheater, we aren‘t in the United States.” I accused, pouting.

“You have a good point, but what if I was an American transfer student?” He challenged. “I’d like it if you respected my traditions.”

“Heck with that, you’re in England now, respect my traditions.” I sneered.

“Touché, but no, I’m not going to answer that… Not now.” He added.

“You’re going to tell me…” I stated and he just ran his fingers through my hair.

“Soon.” He said, his voice somewhat pleased.

I couldn’t avoid sleep any longer as my eyes closed, too heavy to reopen. His fingers continued through my hair, soothing my fears. My mind drifted and my breathing slowed as I fell asleep.
